Standing on my own two feet

I moved out of my parents house yesterday. College will begin soon and since I'd have to take a 2,5 hour trainride to Maastricht in order to attend college (meaning 5 hours per train a day), moving out was the better option. I don't mind, though; I've been dreaming of living on my own since I was 13.

The place I found is an appartment in a flat building. I share it with three other girls, two of whom will go to the same school as me, and one of them will even start attending the same major as I do (Japanese). The place is great. Though the other three all have one big room, I have two small ones. That's pretty neat, so you won't have to live in the same room you're sleeping in. Anyways, at first I wanted to paint one wall in both rooms, one green and the other red, but then I read in the contract (I rented this place) that I have to paint everything back to its original colour once I move out. Yeah, it won't be pretty to paint a crimson red back to creamy white.
I figured I'd just bring the colour in with decorative items and such.

I paid a long visit to Ikea with my parents in order to get some furniture and other necessary items. I swear, if I had the money, I'd buy Ikea empty. They have such great stuff! Yes, it isn't as cheap as some time ago, but the great thing about Ikea is that they always have great quality products, not something that'll break down in two or three weeks. I'll post some pictures of my room later (I'll have to buy a camera first.. hihi)

Anyways, my parents and little brothers helped me move in yesterday. We went to eat in Maastricht afterwards and I tried to persuade them to stay a little longer, but alas, to no avail. The goodbye felt weird. My parents wouldn't stop hugging me, but that didn't matter since I couldn't stop hugging them. I tried the same with my brothers, but they simply pushed me away, as any brother would. I didn't feel emotional or anything, up to the point when they drove off and I waved them goodbye. A little teary moment there, but that all passed as soon as I went in.

None of my roomies were home. Two of them (Evy and Nina) still have to move in and the other one (Nadine) was on vacation. I felt pretty excited about it, since that would mean that at least for a day, I would be really living on my own.

That same evening, however, Nadine returned from a vacation to Spain. From what I can tell so far, she's a really nice girl who loves to help out. We chatted a bit and she tried to help me out with the internet (it's wireless here, but for some reason, my laptop wouldn't make a connection). My day went by by means of watching tv, before I settled in for bed. And there's where I got my first doubts. Did I make the right choice of coming here? Did I choose the right major? Will I ever feel at home in this city? Will I ever make it?

Fortunately, though, my dreams were by far less troubled.

Banks and Music

I just received a new mp3-player, a MPIO MG100.

I was a bit nervous, though. I paid €94 for it, but I read all kinds of bad reviews about it afterwards. It seemed like people couldn't figure out how to recharge the battery or how to transfer their music. There was also a lot of fuss about how people didn't know how to insert their own pictures as a background, but I never intended to use a pic of my own as a wallpaper, so I didn't think much about it.

Anyway, I received an e-mail from the company where I ordered it, that the product would be delivered today, which made me even more nervous. I had to work today, so I wouldn't be at home at the time MPIO would arrive. Fortunately, though, my little brother stayed home today, so he could accept the delivery.

When I used the player for the first time, I was a bit confused, but I figured out fairly early on how the product works. As for recharging, I simply plugged it into a cable which I then plugged into my laptop, and it began to recharge instantly. It was done pretty soon, too.
The hard part was indeed the transfering of music, but I only needed to read two sentences in the manual (which was pretty useful, despite what other people claimed in their reviews), to discover I had to use Windows Media Player. There, I only needed to create a Playlist, which I then had to synchronize with the connected device.

I admit, I felt pretty smart after all this.

At any rate, to talk about a completely different subject, I have to go to the bank in an hour to change my bank account to a student-type, since I just turned 18 and am about to go to college. I'm kind of excited, no matter how stupid it sounds; this will be my first official meeting without a parent around. I'm an adult now, yay!

Afterwards, I have to call my friends about the movie-night we're having today. There was a bit of confusion about what time we should gather, and it still hasn't solved. One of my friends would call me back, but I was out working, so I must have missed her call.

Oh well. It'll turn out well, eventually. (I hope)

Red to Pink

Today has been a weird one. An event similar to Gay Pride was being held in a neighboring city, so a friend of mine and I decided to check it out. Perhaps we should have gone in a bigger group, but all of our other friends were either working, gone to relatives or simply didn't feel like coming. We didn't mind.
It was pretty lousy, to tell the truth. We were expecting to be surrounded by a massive partying crowd wearing all the colours in the world, not one of them caring what bystanders would think of them. Instead we found ourselves surrounded by statue-like people, all of them nervoursly looking around, not knowing how to act. Because I couldn't find anything pink in my closet, I came dressed in blue jeans and a bright red shoulderless top, wearing my hair in two pigtails while covering the top of my head with a black baggy cap. I even drew a red heart on my cheek, to at least look a bit in place at a festival such as Gay Pride.

Yet apart from the hired dancers found all across the city, I couldn't have looked more out of place if I wanted to.

I swear, if there were a hundred people attending, only one of them would have actually been gay. And have known what to do. All the other ninety-nine just shamefully banged their heads a little on the beat of the music. But not too much; you wouldn't want to make a fool out of yourself, now would you?

There was supposed to be a big parade, with lots of vehicles transporting hundreds of dancing and outrageously dressed people with them.

There were three vans. About seventy people. The dancers waved. The public embarrasedly looked the other way.

Oh don't get me wrong; me and my friend actually did wave. And tried to brighten up the day by actually moving our bodies to the beat, but no. We even walked hand in hand with each other, just for fun, but even that moment was spoiled when a motherly-looking lady handed me a sheet of paper with the words "God loves you so don't defy him!" plastered across it.

Makes me cringe when I think about how Holland's supposed to be the leading country when it comes to accepting homosexuals. I bet even Vatican City could have a more vivid Pink festival.

Diploma's

I live in Holland, and summer break has just begun. It's been quite a hectic schoollife for me this year, since it was supposed to be my last one. And apparently, once you're a graduate student, you simply must get bombarded with hundreds and hundreds of essays before your diploma can even get within sight. And considering the fact I'm not quite the most motivated student you can find (read: I'm the reason 'sloth' became one of the Seven Deadly Sins)...
Deadlines are evil. If it weren't for some teachers helping me out and turning a blind eye to my timing of handing over essays, I'd never have graduated.

Speaking of graduating, today is the day I get my diploma. I'm looking forward to it. Some friends of mine graduated last year, which enabled me to see the ceremony and all. It was amazing. All the teachers of the last year had come up with something about the graduates and did a little performance on stage in front of the students and their family. Like a play or a quiz, in which the students were the prime subjects. The vibe and atmosphere was amazing. In Dutch, we call it 'gezellig', but there really isn't a correct English term for it. I don't think there's a language out there other than Dutch which has a correct term, for that matter. It's something along the lines of "cosy" or "warm atmosphere", but that doesn't really cut it. Oh well. It was great, I'll leave it at that.

Anyway, having seen last year's ceremony, I can't wait to find out what will happen this year. I'm also curious about what effect it'll have on me. I still don't feel like I've graduated. It hasn't really come through yet, I guess. When I heard the results of my exams (and thus if I graduated or not), I expected to feel all excited and perhaps I'd even start crying. But none of that. I just sighed and smiled, and that was it. As if they were simple test results I got back.

Perhaps that'll change tonight.

Hello World

I wonder what I was thinking when I created this LiveJournal account. God knows I always drop these kinds of projects along the way. Something to do with the fact I lose motivation faster than I can write, I guess. I used to write in the paper-kinds of journals, though I've never written longer in them than three weeks. That's the time when you suddenly forget to write in your journal one night, and figure 'oh what the hell, I'll write in the morning'. But you never do.

Let's see how long it'll take before I forget to post on this digital Journal.

Anyway, I think an introduction will be in place.

As you can see, my nickname is Sizouze. It's not my real name, since I won't post such information here. If you're really nice, though, you might find out one day.
I'm currently seventeen years old, though I'll turn eighteen on the sixth of July. Which is only about two weeks away! I'm feeling pretty excited about it, but I figure that'll pass once I realise I'm still the same person as I was when I was a year younger. Oh well.
As for hobbies, I mostly enjoy reading, writing, and watching movies or tv-series.
My favourite book is by far Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë, followed by The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens and Anima Mundi by Susanna Tamaro.
As for movies, I immensely enjoyed watching the Japanese movie Dolls, which has to be my top-favourite. Otherwise, I really like Stay (even though it apparently got so-so reviews and did poor at the box-office), Festen, Silence of the Lambs, Paradise Now and The Libertine. When asked about actors, I'd say my favourites are Anthony Hopkins, Helena Bonham Carter, Hattie Morahan, Edward Norton, Johnny Depp, Polly Walker and Hugh Laurie.
And Hugh Laurie brings me to favourite television series, as House M.D. is one of them. Though I find Rome a bit more enjoyable than House. Just a tad, though. Perhaps because of the historical aspect, which always gets me intrigued. More so than a medical one, in any case.

But I think I've bored you long enough with my favourites. And LiveJournal doesn't appear to like long entries, so I think I'll stop here.

I'll keep my fingers crossed for a long LiveJournal-life.
